Suor Genevieve

Last night my friend Bryn and I watched an opera. I honestly hadn’t sat down and actually watched one for entertainment before. But I couldn’t resist this one because, well, it was so bad. It was written by Puccini in the early 20th century and is entitled, “La Fanciulla del West” – “The Golden Girl of the West” in English. It’s an ITALIAN opera based on the GOLD RUSH in CALIFORNIA. Weird? Yes. Especially the line, “Whiskey per tutti!” (“Whiskey for all!”). The word “poker” is in there and is pronounced “pokair” (a la Italiano), and the names of the characters are Minnie, Dick Johnson and Jack Rance (among others). Rance is pronounced “Ran-chay” (because all ‘c’s are said like ‘k’s in Italian) and the other names just sound weird with Italian accents. Whatever possessed Puccini to write this opera – I just don’t know. He shouldn’t have written it. If Aaron Copland, an American composer has written it, it would have been much better. Plus, the soprano was not terribly great. She was flat most of the time. I laughed so hard when the subtitle “Useless…good for nothing…” came up during one of her arias. Truer words were never spoken. The only saviour of this piece is Placido Domingo. He is freaking fantastic. He may be 50 years old, but with a voice like that and the acting to go with it, I’d fall in love with him on stage any day.

Today I had an audition for the summer opera here (summer meaning June). My audition was meh. There were good moments, and there were “What the heck was that?” moments. We’ll see what happens. And tonight I sat in on a rehearsal for “Suor Angelica” a 1 act opera I was recruited for yesterday. I will play Sister Genevieve. The story is convoluted – surprise, surprise! But it’s one of the bigger roles in the opera, which is excellent.

And now I have to vent. The Superbowl is over. Woo hoo. I didn’t care anymore. I never cared. I tried to convert to NFL football, but I couldn’t make the change. And now for my rants: 1. Riders: could you sign Henry Burris one of these days so I can sleep at night? 2. NHL and NHLPA: you both suck. I’m so angry at both of you. You’re not even putting any effort into this CBA. If you actually cared about the game and the fans, you would have had 24 hour bargaining sessions back in September. You don’t care about anything except your own bank accounts. You’re hockey players. You’re entertainers. End of story.

There. Now I feel better. And it’s time for bed. I have to call the Mainstream Association tomorrow morning. I think they’re going to tell me whether or not they are hiring me. Cross your fingers that they do!
