Potpourri…

I finally watched “Friday Night Lights” last night. So good. I want football season to start right now! My Mom gave me a Roughrider charm for my charm bracelet in honor of my recital last week. Yeah! I cannot WAIT for the first game of the year!

I also read “A Jest of God” this week. Really good. I’ve never known anyone who’s liked Margaret Laurence’s books, but I really enjoyed this one. I identified with the main character a lot; I often felt as if it were my story. That’s the sign of a good book.

Yesterday I overheard some people talking on the bus, and I swear I heard them say that our Prime Minister had resigned. So, I reverted to “News Junkie Nicole” and practically ran home, so excited to spend the evening curling up on the couch while I watched Newsworld analyze the current national political crisis. And when I got home – nothing. I was incredibly disappointed. Sad, aren’t I?

I just had the best fish ‘n’ chips by Granville Island today. They were really good. Nice and crunchy. Ah, to be able to sit outside and enjoy lunch with friends while it snows in Saskatchewan…

In case you didn’t know, BC is in the midst of a provincial election campaign. Don’t ask me if I’m voting. You know the answer. Whom I will vote for is yet to be decided. It’s odd not to have a conservative party. Very weird. The Greens are a lot more popular around here than they are anywhere else, but they still don’t make a whole lot of difference. But as I came home from work yesterday, a candidate from the Marijuana Party offered me a brochure. I politely (at least I think it was said politely…) said, “No thank you.” And as I walked away, the guy said, “Eliminate prejudice.” He was clearly talking to me. I just about turned around and argued and with him, but I had somewhere else to be. I was quite annoyed. I’m sorry if I didn’t take your stupid brochure. Do that mean that I’m necessarily prejudiced towards you? That means that I’m completely against Falun Dong because I don’t take one of their pamphlets every time I walk past them? Am I anti-Greenpeace or anti-World Vision just because I don’t talk to them everytime they ask me to on the street? No. Maybe I just don’t want another piece of paper in my bag. Maybe I don’t want to kill another tree by taking that piece of paper. Ha! You’re prejudiced against the environment Mr. Marijuana man! Don’t you tell me I’m prejudiced until you can say you aren’t yourself.

Yeah for hockey! Yes, it’s the world championships and the big stars aren’t there, but it’s still hockey. And I’m happy.

Did I mention that both the Grey Cup AND the World Junior Hockey Chamionships are here this year? I’d better start saving my money for some tickets…

My brother’s name is Lucas, and we call him Luke. Seems to work well enough for him. The story is that I was named after both of my grandmother’s, and when my brother was born, my Grandpa Alberts didn’t want him to be called “Howard”, and my grandpa was quite religious, so he picked Lucas for him. Neat story, but its also kinda sad cause my grandpa passed away before Luke got to know him…. yeah.Anyways, yes, parents are brilliant. I only wish I’d known that sooner.~Jo
