I’m Nicole, a small town Saskatchewan girl who likes thinking about and debating big ideas about God, gender, politics, justice and faith.
Here’s a little bit about me that informs what you can expect from this blog…
God and Faith
I’m a somewhat reluctant Seventh-Day Adventist. I’d prefer to call myself Christian, but there are a lot of unfortunate connotations with that noun these days. I suppose it’d be easiest to described me as a progressive ecumenical person who’s a lot more interested in applying the Gospel to my daily life and learning more about other faiths than in getting caught up in theological debates.
So, my perfect church would have a Lutheran liturgy, a gospel choir, contemporary praise music, and observe the Sabbath, as well as have a lot of social justice occurring every other day of the week.
Politics, Justice and Gender
By the above description, you’ve probably figured out that I’m pretty liberal, although I’d describe myself as a fiscal feminist social democrat (if that even exists). I don’t belong to a political party, but I have strong opinions about those I don’t agree with. I’m a political idealist, in that I believe that true citizen engagement can create a vibrant democracy that works towards fully embracing the values of equality.
I’ve struggled at various times in my life, as we all have. I’ve suffered from anxiety and depression, which culminated in a couple of breakdowns. I’ve battled with my weight. I’ve been the victim of bullying. I’ve been knocked down a few times, but, in the words of Chumbawamba, “I get up again. You’re never gonna keep me down.”
Every post title is the title of a song. I studied music for years, so every once in awhile I may sing for you. I like to write, so you may see some of that. I like to travel, so you’ll see lists of places I’d like to visit. And I like to dream big, so you’ll see a lot of my hopes and wishes.
I tend to read a lot, so almost every week you’ll see a collection of the best articles I’ve read on the web, along with a list of what I’m reading and some recommended books, music, etc.
I’m a devoted Saskatchewan Roughriders fan, so once football season starts, there’s no doubt that I’ll have lots to say about my Riders and the CFL.
Thanks for visiting – I hope you’ll come back!
